Week #1 in Review

The first week of school was a huge success!  We played a few games to get to know each other.  I focused on routines and procedures within our third grade classroom as well as reviewed where we go for alert drills.  Third grade REALLY picks up quickly as far as being an independent thinker and having responsibilities.  I'll explain more about expectations and curriculum on Wednesday night at 7:30pm.  If you cannot attend Curriculum Night please do not worry.  I will have everything hard-copied and sent home in the Friday Folder for you.

In third grade we use the Second Step Program to help our students develop tools and strategies when dealing with a variety of situations and feelings.  We do one lesson per week and sometimes there is a family homework that needs to be completed.  Our lessons are usually on a Friday.  You get an entire week to complete this with your third grader.
The homework is due the following Friday.

I introduced and read two picture books to the class.  After discussion they had to compare and contrast the two main characters in the book.  Both books have a theme that pertains to being yourself!

Buddy Reading

The students are building their reading stamina! They began at 10 minutes and ended last Friday reading for 20 minutes!  Way to go SUPERSTAR readers!  There was even time for Buddy Reading!  Also, the third graders had to create their writer's notebook over the long weekend.  We will be sharing these on Tuesday.

The Everyday Math Program came our with a 4th version totally aligned with Common Core.  Click HERE to read the Parent Letter that explains more about our first unit.  We reviews the number grid as well as played a number grid game.  Click HERE to get see a number grid and print it out!
