Week #4 in Review

Last Friday was our first Learning Buddy meeting with the Kindergartners in Mrs. Z. and Mrs. M.’s class. The students enjoyed  working together.

On Friday we also had our Marco's Pizza Lunch that we won for ordering the most pizzas for September!  Thank you Parents and Marco's!
Colin, Lucas, and Jackson were hungry!

Our class received a letter from a student who would’ve been in our class this year.  Her name is Zahraa.  Her and her family moved to Kuwait for this year and they are having some fun adventures!

**My DRA testing sub cancelled last week therefore; I have a new testing date which is October 12th

In reading the third graders have been responding to a variety of texts.  Some have been silly, while others were more serious.  This week we will begin learning about character traits. Our new read aloud book is titled Frindle by Andrew Clements. 

SUMMARY: Is Nick Allen a troublemaker? He really just likes to liven things up at school -- and he's always had plenty of great ideas. When Nick learns some interesting information about how words are created, suddenly he's got the inspiration for his best plan ever...the frindle. Who says a pen has to be called a pen? Why not call it a frindle? Things begin innocently enough as Nick gets his friends to use the new word. Then other people in town start saying frindle. Soon the school is in an uproar, and Nick has become a local hero. His teacher wants Nick to put an end to all this nonsense, but the funny thing is frindle doesn't belong to Nick anymore. The new word is spreading across the country, and there's nothing Nick can do to stop it. (

In writing we have pen pals with a 3rd grade class at Wixom Elementary.  The students were very excited to receive their first letter last week.  This week we will be writing back to our pen pals.


We also worked on "Zany Writing" and writing fun stories!  Ask abbout "Phillip the Nickle."

The Unit 1 test is scheduled for Thursday, October 8th.  A study guide will be going home on Tuesday as homework to complete. We will go over the guide in class on Wednesday.  Students can take the corrected guide home for one last review.

One last field test with our mock rocks was pouring the contents of the viles into evaporating trays in order to see what’s left behind once the water is gone.  
Vocabulary we’ve learned:
Earth Material

The geography of the Great Lake’s Region is the main focus of this unit.  The third graders are practicing how to use cardinal directions.  Most important is being able to tell which state(s) are east, south, west, and north (not a state but…). Our 5 Great Lakes (H.O.M.E.S.) and that Michigan has plenty of natural resources such as copper, iron-ore, trees, water, etc.  Some key vocabulary includes:

Human Resources – The people who work or the employees.
Natural Resources – Materials or substances such as minerals, water, forests, etc. that occur in nature.
Human Features – Something man-made; made by humans.
Natural Feature – Features such as rivers, islands, waterfall that are NOT man made.
