Week #11 in Review!

I want to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Winter is here and the students all need to dress for the weather.  PLEASE label your child's gear.  You have no idea how man pair of black snow pants etc. there are at school.  Thank you in advance!

Kindness is our PBIS trait for November.  Last week our TEAMS met to learn more about being kind and created a kindness poster.

With our kindergarten learning buddies we did a marshmallow challenge.  The challenge was to work as a team using only a few materials in order to create the tallest free-standing tower.  It was great to see all the ideas, planning, and teamwork!

Our wonderful PTA purchased a magazine called Time For Kids (TFK).  The students have been learning how to read articles in a magazine, find evidence to answer questions pertaining to the articles, as well as learn about main idea.

Because of Winn Dixie is the new chapter book I began reading to the class last week. Because of Winn-Dixie, a big, ugly, happy dog, 10-year-old Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the somewhat unusual residents of her new hometown, Naomi, Florida. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal begins to find her place in the world and let go of some of the sadness left by her mother's abandonment seven years earlier.  With her newly adopted, goofy pooch at her side, Opal explores her bittersweet world and learns to listen to other people's lives. In writing we’ve been practicing using grabbing leads.  The third graders learned how to lead with a sound, a question, dialogue, and humor. The topic of personal experiences is what we will be writing about this card marking.

We are now working in unit 3 in math.  We reviewed “What’s My Rule?” and writing numbers in expanded form in order to try different addition/subtraction strategies.  Click HERE for the Parent Letter to learn more. One of the underlying themes in our math program is begin able to explain your thinking using diagrams, math words, pictures, number lines, etc.

Each student in our class has a MOBY MAX login and password card.  This is a GREAT way to help your child keep up on math fluency, number stories, and problem solving.  I can login and see how the students are progressing.  It’s a wonderful FREE resource.

Our structures of life unit begin by looking at seeds and learning about the life cycle of plants.  The botanists have a class sprouter to observe and take notes on.  They also have soaked Lima Beans to explore next week.  Click HERE to learn more!

Unit 2 covers Michigan’s Economy.  Please click HERE to learn more about what’s coming up!  If you are a family that likes to get a head start, click HERE for the study guide.
