Week #12 in Review!

CLASSROOM NEWS
I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving break!  Only 26 days until Christmas…YIKES!

Before break we were able to play some Thanksgiving Trivia using Kahoot and see the ABCs of Thanksgiving presented by Mrs. Doran's first grade class.




Kindness is our PBIS trait for November.  We will be selecting and honoring our classroom leader later this week.  I wonder who will be voted for as the student who exhibited the most kindness. 

 
LANGUAGE ARTS
Our wonderful PTA purchased a magazine called Time For Kids (TFK).  The students have been learning how to read articles in a magazine, find evidence to answer questions pertaining to the articles, as well as learn about main idea.  This will help us when reading nonfiction articles in science too!

Tess's Tree
The third graders use Google Classroom for the first time last week.  Each student had an assignment in this virtual classroom to complete by following a set of directions which included going to a link in order to read a story titled Tess's Tree.  After, the students had to respond to the story by creating a new Google document and writing me a letter explaining their thoughts on the story.  It was a great!


Because of Winn Dixie is the chapter book I began reading to the class.  Because of Winn-Dixie, a big, ugly, happy dog, 10-year-old Opal learns 10 things about her long-gone mother from her preacher father. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends among the somewhat unusual residents of her new hometown, Naomi, Florida. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal begins to find her place in the world and let go of some of the sadness left by her mother's abandonment seven years earlier.  With her newly adopted, goofy pooch at her side, Opal explores her bittersweet world and learns to listen to other people's lives. In writing last week we wrote about things we were thankful for as well as worked on our pieces we typed on the Chromebooks.  Each student got to publish a piece of writing after adding dialogue and a few more details. 


MATH
The students are working in unit 3.  We reviewed “What’s My Rule?” and writing numbers in expanded form in order to try different addition/subtraction strategies.  Click HERE for the Parent Letter to learn more. One of the underlying themes in our math program is begin able to explain your thinking using diagrams, math words, pictures, number lines, etc.
Mental Math
What's My Rule?

Each student in our class has a MOBY MAX and Xtra Math login and password card.  These are GREAT ways to help your child keep up on math fluency, number stories, and problem solving skills.  Also, I can login and see how the students are progressing.  These are wonderful FREE resources.


SCIENCE
Our structures of life unit begin by looking at seeds and learning about the life cycle of plants.  The botanists have observed germination and learned about the different parts of a seed.  Click HERE to learn more!
