Week #11 in Review!

*Friday afternoon I had to leave unexpectedly from school due to a family emergency; my youngest cousin (who just turned 23 last Monday) passed away in a tragic accident Friday.  Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.


Our author visit from Maria Dismondy was awesome!  W got to see the cover of her new book coming out in February (The Jelly Donut Differnce) as well as learn all about being determined and having a growth mindset.  It was a great assembly!

We had a big day Friday with our first B.Y.O.D (Bring Your Own Device) day!  The students were amazing at following the rules and expectations.  Every Friday will be a B.Y.O.D. day!  Please have everything downloaded and logged in so that your child can easily access reading, writing, spelling, and math apps appropriate for school. 


The students are working on finding evidence when they read informational texts.  This is very important when reading articles for science and MI Studies.  There is a lot of information to learn and understand!  Last week we used our Storyworks Jr. magazine to incorporate an interactive non-fiction article pertaining to the importance of bees.  The students had to answer questions in order to create a topic sentence, find three details, and then come up with a concluding sentence. 

The students are completed their personal narratives!  I look forward to them sharing these final pieces with each other this week.  We will focus on punctuation and grammar this week in order to dive into paragraph writing after Thanksgiving break.  Writing complete paragraphs is a skill we will be practicing the next few weeks and will be an expectation for written pieces and constructed responses.

The students created a special Thankful Turkey last week in order to write about what they are thankful for this year.  Gobble! Gobble!

I sent home the unit 2 math BA scores in the Friday Folder.  We begin Unit 3 this week. Click HERE for the Family Letter to learn more about this  unit!

Homework is given every Tuesday and Thursday.  Each home-link is a review of a concept the students have learned in class.  We encourage parents to help with the home-links as well as ask the students questions.

Don’t forget, each student received a login card in order to access the EDM4 games, home-links, and helpful videos.  This card is stapled into the front cover of the assignment notebook that is inside of the binder.  Please click HERE to access this site. Your child also has access to Moby Max. This is a free resource that your child has access to by using the login I gave in the beginning of the year.  Lastly, I signed the class up for the Xtra math site to help with fact fluency and skill building at home.  Click HERE to get to that site. 
ALL login/passwords should be in the front cover of your child’s planner to access easily anytime.

 The science BA will be given on Tuesday, November 22nd.  We will go over the study guide in class tomorrow to make sure everyone is studying with correct information.  I meant to do this on Friday but had to leave. 

The geologists learned that there are 3 main rock groups: igneous, sedimentary, & metamorphic.  Mock rocks were investigated as well as weathering, mineral hardness (the Moh’s Scale) using scratch tests, and categorizing properties of minerals. This is a vocabulary rich unit. Articles, vocab. cards, and other materials to help your child review should be in his/her science notebook and/or their science folder in the binder.
