Week #18 in Review

We celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr. today!  As a class, we worked with our Kindergarten Learning Buddies last week to learn more about being an UPSTANDER instead of a BYSTANDER. Take a look!

February's PBIS focus will be on kindness and empathy!  Random Acts of Kindness Week is Feb. 13-17th.  We will have a special assembly on Feb. 6 with Caleb White of the Caleb White Project. He will help us launch our focus on kindness (

The students continue working with expository (nonfiction) text features.  All of this is in preparation for a research type reports the students will begin very soon.

The third grade team is excited to introduce a new reading resource that we are “trying out” with a short free trial.  The program is called Raz-Kids.  The resource has some awesome tools that will help your child to not only read but practice in a way that encompasses many of the reading strategies we discuss in school.

Please explore this resource with your child before the free trial is over (January 18th). Meanwhile, we are asking for a $5.00 donation to help cover the cost.  This subscription would be available for their use throughout the summer months until the end of August.  Using it over the summer will help prevent the “summer slide.”  As you know, reading daily is essential for your child to grow as a learner.  Raz-Kids provides them a tool that will help to motivate them to read.

If you would like more information about Raz-Kids click on the link below.

The third graders have been working very hard on paragraph writing.  Having a topic sentence, 3-5 detail sentences, and a concluding sentence are now the expectation for all written responses (constructed) and published writing.

We are working in unit 4 which is all about measurement!  The students have been learning how to use a ruler with both inches and centimeters, measuring to the nearest ½ inch, exploring polygons, reviewing quadrilaterals, and much more!
Click HERE for the unit 4 Family Letter.

Homework is given every Tuesday and Thursday.  Each home-link is a review of a concept the students have learned in class.  We encourage parents to help with the home-links as well as ask the students questions.

Don’t forget, each student received a login card in order to access the EDM4 games, home-links, and helpful videos.  This card is stapled into the front cover of the assignment notebook that is inside of the binder.  Please click HERE to access this site.
Your child also has access to Moby Max. This is a free resource that your child has access to by using the login I gave in the beginning of the year.

Lastly, I signed the class up for the XTRA math site to help with fact fluency and skill building at home.  Click HERE to get to that site.  ALL login/passwords should be in the front cover of your child’s planner to access easily anytime.

The scientists said farewell to our classroom creatures last week.  We plan on giving the BA on Friday, January 20th.  A study guide went home last Friday (January 13th).  Please help remind your third grader to review little sections throughout the week in order to study for this assessment.

Unit 2 covers Michigan’s economy! We are wrapping up a last few lessons. Each student will need to come up with their own business plan complete with capital, natural, and human resources.  Also, they’ll need to share what goods/service they will be using, opportunity costs, a good location for their business, and how their business will help Michigan’s economy.
