READING
I am currently reading Because of Winn Dixie By Kate DiCamillo to the class.  This book touches is a favorite!

SUMMARY: The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket--and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar.Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship—and forgiveness—can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm. (goodread.com)

WRITING
In writing, the students have been learning about persuasive writing.  Last week we tried out writing a review of our favorite restaurants.  I was surprised to hear how many students considered McDonald’s their favorite place to eat.    We continue to practice restating and having proper punctuation, spelling etc. within our written work.

The students are still reading non-fiction texts and learning how to find explicit evidence to support their thinking.  We’ve been practicing how to search articles for specific proof/details (and highlight) that help support answers to questions being asked across the curriculum.  The students are getting much better at this!

MATH
We began unit 7 which focuses on fractions!  This is a tough unit.  Please review homework with your third grader.  Also, it is really important that the students continue to practice their multiplication facts.

Click HERE for the unit 7 parent letter.

Homework is given every Tuesday and Thursday.  Each home-link is a review of a concept the students have learned in class.  We encourage parents to help with the home-links as well as ask the students questions.

SCIENCE
MATTER & ENERGY is our final unit of study for third grade.  We began learning about what energy is and about energy sources.  Click HERE to learn more!

MI STUDIES

We are focusing on Michigan’s Government for our last unit.  Please click HERE to learn more!
